Our Normalization. By Pavel Kopp

This year, 2019, marks the important 30th anniversary of our Velvet Revolution, and so it provides us with an opportunity to look back.

A new generation that does not remember totalitarianism grew up by now, but I think it is necessary to remind ourselves of it occasionally because it is part of our turbulent history.

I therefore welcomed the idea of the director Jan Rousek to make a television film under the name EPOCHA that would reflect on the period from August 1968 to November 1989. After he asked me for some photos to use in the film, I spent a week digging through my old negatives, and finally offered him some. I was pleased that he was intrigued and that he promised to use them in his film.

After many years I found that the  photos also appealed to me, so I decided to show some of them to you at this exhibition called OUR NORMALIZATION. There are also subtitles, which I don’t normally use, but our children know very little about that time period. The photos you see here were taken spontaneously, and some were just family photos. Many were not  published at the time they were taken. So here you will find both my children, my daughter Klára and my son Pavel, my wife Ludmila and her father, Mr. Turek. Let’s take it as a testimony, because they too were part of that time period.

I would like to thank Mr. Rousk for his initiative in creating the television film, Ms. Eva Stehlíková, the manager of Tower Park Prague, who immediately offered me exhibition space at the Žižkov TV Tower, my son Pavel for making invitations, and preparing the photos and catalog, and finally my gallery owner Mr. Norbert Šlacht, who quickly printed and framed the photographs.

This time getting the original idea was the hardest part, but then suddenly everything else was simple; I felt the reflection of the velvet rebellion of that time thirty years ago when we all wanted to help each other.

And so I wish for both myself and you that it will last for a while.

Na letošní rok 2019 připadá důležité 30. výročí naší Sametové revoluce, a tak máme příležitost k určitému ohlédnutí.

Vyrostla nám nová generace, která už totalitu nepamatuje, ale myslím, že i tu je třeba si občas připomenout, protože je součástí naší pohnuté historie.

Uvítal jsem proto nápad pana režiséra Jana Rouska natočit televizní film o období od srpna 1968 do listopadu 1989 pod názvem EPOCHA, na jeho výzvu jsem se týden hrabal ve svých starých negativech, a některé fotky mu pak nabídl. Potěšilo mě, že ho zaujaly a že mi přislíbil je do svého filmu použít.

Ty fotky ale po letech oslovily i mě, a tak jsem se rozhodl ukázat část z nich i Vám na této výstavě pod názvem NAŠE NORMALIZACE. Jsou zde uvedeny i s titulky, které normálně nepoužívám, jenže naše děti o té době už ví velmi málo. Fotografie, které zde vidíte, vznikaly spontánně, některé jen jako rodinné a mnohé z nich byly tehdy nepublikovatelné. Takže zde najdete i obě moje děti, dceru Kláru a syna Pavla, manželku Ludmilu a jejího otce, p. ing. Turka. Berme to jako svědectví, protože i oni byli součástí té doby.

Chci tedy poděkovat panu režiséru Rouskovi za jeho iniciativu s televizním filmem, dále paní Evě Stehlíkové, manažerce Tower Park Praha, která mi okamžitě nabídla výstavní prostory na Žižkovské televizní věži, svému synu Pavlovi za zhotovení pozvánky, přípravu fotek a katalogu a konečně svému galeristovi panu Norbertu Šlachtovi, který fotografie bleskově vytiskl a zarámoval.

Tentokrát stačil nápad a najednou bylo všechno jednoduché, pocítil jsem odlesk toho tehdejšího sametového vzepětí před třiceti lety, kdy jsme si všichni chtěli pomáhat.

A tak přeji sobě i Vám, aby nám to ještě chvíli vydrželo.
